Never did understand the appeal. Though I'd rather listen to an entire Tool album than 1 second of a nickelback song.

I like the band, but i think you'll find this is the wrong forum to discuss them. The Tavern had a Tool thread a few weeks ago.

I've never been a fan of their whole style in general.

Shawnathan, that's a real hodgepodge of bands to group together under the same banner.

Never cared for Tool, but then again I honestly never gave them much of a chance.

Alt Rock, maybe with a hint of prog.

I like Lateralis, that album is overall pretty damn solid, other than that, meh.

I've never really given Tool a fair listen, probably because they resemble a proggy Alice in Chains, and I don't like AiC. For all I know they could be a great band, but that style of singing is a real turn-off for me.

They have elements of gothic and industrial, I suppose metal and prog too, without being strictly any of those styles. Alternative is more of an umbrella term and a marketing tool.

Lateralus is a great moder/n album. If all alternative sounded like TOOL, the world would be a better place.

Gothic??? Really? In what songs? And I don't think industrial really applies to any of their songs in a significant way. Please explain how/where you feel they have these elements in their music.

My friend is really into them and talks about them a lot. I respect them and they're a pretty good band. They have crazy use of rhythm and timing which i like a lot. It's fun for me to figure out what time signature they use for each part. lol. Vicarious is an awesome song by them. I have yet to hear more stuff from them though.

I meant more like a feel, I wouldn't classify them strictly as any of those styles.

I can't say that I understand how they even feel like any of those styles.... Any explanation or any examples of songs where you actually "feel" any of these styles?

For example the beginning of "Vicarious" has a gothic feel, or the song "Sober", which also sounds industrial at times with that rhythm, but not industrial enough to be classified as such.

We did just have a thread about this. But I'll say again, I'm a big fan, and they're the best live band I've seen yet.

I can see a bit of what you mean in Sober having a very slight industrial influence due to the distorted bass line, but I really cannot see at all what is gothic about Vicarious....Not saying that you don't hear it, but it seems a bit tenuous of a connection at best...

Some people love Mozart in junior high. Doesn't mean there's nothing more to like other than the surface stuff when you get older. I'm not saying Tool's the greatest, since they're far from it, but they have brilliant lyrics, quite a good vocalist, and a decent rhythm section with the drums and bass. It might no longer be something you're into, and there's no problem with that, but the logic in your above statement is highly fallacious.

Ahh, my bad. No problem with some laughs. Just seemed like a poor reason to write them off otherwise, though.

Tool are a pretty cool band; I find their music oddly soothing and nice to chill out to. Their fans can be pretty infuriating though.

Swans is industrial, so is Godflesh and White Zombie. Where the fuck did you get this list from???

Whenever I say I don't like Tool on any forum/chatroom/internet event, I am always responded with "You have the worst musical interests in the world." I am sorry that I don't listen to the most musically fascinating band, god forbid I have an opinion on something!

a couple years ago, i used to be a huge fan, and to the point i spent more than i care to list to go see them live, although it's the closest you'll ever get to the Pink Floyd experience these days. amazing live show, the sound sounded better than the cds themselves.

i actually prefer their latest album overall to anything that they've done, but Aenima and Lateralus have some really good songs themselves. Rosetta Stoned is fucking epic. i don't care as much for their straight up alternative rock sound they had on Undertow or that EP or whatever they released after it. Aenima is where they really start with me.

I have to say I am quite the fan of Undertow and Ænima, and this is quite significant for me, since these are the ONLY two non-metal albums I own or ever listen to. Tonight I've been listening to Ænima, and came here hoping I might find a Tool thread, and was pleasantly surprised to see one on the first page.

From what I've heard of Opiate, it sounds like more standard alt rock music and kinda boring. They really developed feeling and proper song structure on Undertow and Ænima. The instrumentation is complex and keeps my attention as the riffs/tunes develop, and the singer is very talented and has a good range. Sometimes as the riffs warp and develop over the mid-paced rhythms and slightly odd drum beats I get a kind of mystical feeling that I would feel throughout a Burzum album.

I heard some parts of Lateralus, and it suffers badly from Opeth syndrome. Soft acoustic or synth parts thrown in for the sake of it, as opposed to actually developing a song as they did previously, and recycled riffs and ideas glued together to form excessively long "songs". I think most people here who have been listening to music for a long time, can tell when a band has lost inspiration and is going through the motions. Also something is wrong with the vocals, as they develop the pop music tendency of using a husky voice close to the microphone to try to sound "sexy" and adopt a teenage, nasal sound like the Placebo douchebag (he is an extreme example though).

I didn't bother to listen to anything after Lateralus.

I don't really care about the genre classification argument, but if song structure is given weight then Tool just about fits in the metal category. Probably the riffing style is the most pertinent characteristic though, and it resembles a kind of psychedelic rock style more than a metal riffing style.
