Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

This is such a wonderfully lyrical, angry, passionate album... great stuff.

Susanne Sundfor - "White Foxes"

That chorus is just brilliant, quite a dazzling chord progression and melody.

Same for me. The late 80s more electronic albums are my favorites, and that album has a bit of a different vibe, but "Mercy In You" is my favorite track on it.

Incapacitants - s/t - recorded in 1981 and not released until 2020. I miss when noise was psychedelic. This is some relatively crude stuff, but it has a nice splash of color. Makes clear the ear was there from the beginning, much like Merzbow and Brume. All very different perspectives, but quality from the git-go. I'm not much for collaborations, but with this particular recording, I wonder if greatness would have come from a Brume/Incapacitants collision in the early 80s. Brume was a study of krautrock and prog rock, but I think the two would have paired then.

Kurt Vile-(watch my moves)-reminds me of a more experimental, less-aggressive Dinosaur Jr. Singer/songwriter stuff. Cool but not life-changing. Might even enjoy it more with another listen.

Oh absolutely. And from all reports, he's putting out a double album on May 13th and I personally can't wait. Been too long.

Black Star - No Fear of Time

Talib Kweli and Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) return after God knows how many years with an entirely Madlib-produced album. The nostalgia is hitting like nothing else and I love how loose and mature some of this feels in pockets.

For sure. I didn't know his new one would be a double album. I'd felt like I hadn't spent much time on hip hop for a long time now. Might try the Pusha-T album you talked about sometime soon by the way.

Father John Misty - Chloe

It's fucking late and this fits the mood tonight with how long I have been stuck inside.

Crass - The Feeding of the 5000

Heard about it from some socialists here. Crazy stuff, I think I like it.

I think you'll like it, Pusha T has a knack for crafting cinematic grandiose tunes and his delivery is witty and engaging. I'd also like to recommend A Tribe Called Quest's double album We got it from Here... Thank You 4 Your service - the title being a tribute to their late member Phife Dawg - which as far as modern masterpieces of the genre go, it's way up there; sonically diverse and brilliant with clever lyricism and insightful commentary, I'd be surprised if you didn't like it.

Def Leppard - Hysteria

Cross-posted on the Metal NP thread. Man, say what you will on how pop-oriented this is but it's still a great song. Yeah, it's pop metal, hair metal, glam metal. But it's still a damn fine song.

I do have Midnight Marauders from them, haven't played it in a while though. I ought to try that one - I think Jack White did some stuff on it too.

Babes in Toyland - Fontanelle

Raw almost Soundgarden-esque heaviness. Feral and intriguing.

The Cult - Heart of Soul

The Cult were never known as a 'power ballad band' back in the day. But this song is one of the better slower songs they ever made.

The Facade Band - Say the Word

This song ridiculous and stupid. I love it. That chorus is an immaculate earworm.

Finnish rock band. They have a few good songs. One of those bands from who you only need some compilation CD.

The Damned - Twisted Nerve

Punk orthodoxy tends to brush The Damned's goth albums aside, which says a lot about punk orthodoxy. Top quality songwriting on the whole Black Album.

I don't know about that. The punks I know who are into The Damned are pretty fanatical. Goth, which has some other weird name now, is rather popular in punk. There's not a lot of it coming out, but what does gets noticed. Rikk Agnew and Christian Death are held high too.

Flying Burrito Brothers - The Gilded Palace Of Sin

What to say about this one? Classic example of Rock 'n' Roll/Soul/Country hybrid from the late 60's. Great pedal steel guitar throughout. Gram Parsons at his best. Great vocal harmonies, great songs, great playing, etc... Just so good.

New Order - Temptation

I knew of New Order since the late '80s but I only discovered this song from the Trainspotting soundtrack around 1997. Great song.

All the better, then. I've had different experiences. There's a reason the band called one of their album "Strawberries" [for Pigs].

When I first got into The Damned, I mostly just stuck to their first three albums, especially the debut - probably because I was a teenager and wanted the more aggressive stuff like 100% of the time. Also, another name for goth is deathrock, though to be fair that tag generally refers to the more punk-leaning goth bands (like the aforementioned Christian Death circa "Only Theatre of Pain", or 45 Grave).

Anyways, speaking of goth...
Siouxsie And The Banshees - Candyman

I really like their "Tinderbox" album. All of their stuff ranges from good to great imo but that album's my personal favorite.

Tinderbox was the first one I got, but Peepshow's my favorite. I'm probably overdue to play some of them again. So much music so little time.

Babes in Toyland - Handsome & Gretel

Like Bikini Kill's early stuff, this is almost unhinged in how wild and aggressive it is. But this also has more metallic, chunky riffs than BK did.

Dead Kennedys - Frankenchrist

Very cool - long drawling primal rock songs. Aggressive, to the point lyrics. Loving it.

Been binging on Hatchie's Giving the World Away and Keepsake albums before seeing her live Friday night. As far as the poppier, catchy side of dream-pop/shoegaze is concerned, she's ace, and fantastic live. Seeing and hearing her perform "Stay With Me" and "The Rhythm" in particular was euphoric. She's also cool and friendly as I got to chat with her after the show. Catch her gig if you're into this sort of dream-pop.

Also, The Black Album has always been my favorite by The Damned. I like both goth and punk and that album is one of the better meshings of the two.

Crush 40 - Live and Learn

This song is peak mid-2000s. Which means it's lame and stupid and awful and I kind of love it.

Holy fuck that song brings back some memories. Sonic games have always had banger music.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F# A# Infinity LP

Spinning my first record. Technically it's the second I've bought, but I'm listening to it first. Right off the bat, I can hear the differences between this and the digital version. For starters, a lot more french horn in the Dead Flag Blues intro. I love it.

Because of the heaviest thread, I went to Swans, but not the heaviest Swans. White Light from the Mouth of Infinity 1991 and Love of Life 1992. Just so happened to work well with talking about goth and punk, too. As much as I love Swans, the albums from 1987 forward are long businesses. Brevity is not one of Gira's virtues. I have to split them up into two days.

Crass - Stations of the Crass

This is so awesome. Becoming a new obsession. Lyrically on point, musically fun and groovy with a lot of unpredictable twists from track to track.

edit - this is like an even more expansive, sprawling version of the debut. Wild and intense. Weird stuff.

It's cool to witness enthusiasm for Crass from the context of this board. I can't stand Penny's circus drumming (I'm a rhythm section person), but Crass has been a part of my life for so long that I don't hear of new listeners very often. I have such reverence for nearly everything about them, despite not being able to listen to them very often or for very long. I look at their record covers and notes more than I play the records.

I've always had an affinity for odd jaunty rhythms and bouncy stuff like that I guess, ever since I got into Slough Feg at like 15. Doesn't bother me.

But yes the content and messaging is a breath of fresh air. Hits the spot.

That might be my favorite as well. "Cities In Dust" is iconic, and "The Sweetest Chill" is magnificent, along with the rest. Their 80s discography is just so strong though, at least seven superb albums in a row. They're one of those bands where I had to track them down on vinyl.

The Muslims - s/t

Super straight up aggro punk stuff. Very brash lyrics but I like it. Digging it.

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls

Played it while reading Keith Richards' autobiography the other night; a lot of excellent song craft going on for sure.

The Pursuit of Happiness - Walking in the Woods

This band arrived too early. If they came out in 1991 or 1992 instead of 1989, they would've gone on to greater success. They preceded the whole alternative rock scene and were in the midst of the college radio thing of the time. It didn't help that they weren't able to make another good album after their excellent debut "Love Junk".

Chris Stapleton is truly a phenomenal talent. Some incredibly powerful harmonies on this album too.

This was the only hip hop that I could get into back in the day. I still don't listen to hip hop these days but I'm more willing to explore it.
